Thirteen passengers lost their lives and 15 others sustained injuries after a tragic incident on Wednesday near Pachora in Jalgaon district, Maharashtra. The accident occurred when passengers of the Mumbai-bound Pushpak Express, fearing a fire, jumped onto adjacent railway tracks and were struck by the Karnataka Express, officials confirmed.

The mishap unfolded between Pardhade and Maheji stations, approximately 400 kilometers from Mumbai. Officials stated that the chain was pulled on the Pushpak Express at around 4:45 p.m., leading to the train's halt. Passengers panicked after perceiving smoke and exited the train, stepping onto tracks where the Bengaluru-Delhi Karnataka Express was passing.

Authorities have identified eight of the deceased, including four individuals from Nepal. Among them were two women and a minor boy. The identities of the remaining victims are being ascertained, with Aadhaar cards aiding the identification process, Special Inspector General of Police Dattatraya Karale stated.

Manoj Arora, Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Central Circle, will conduct a detailed investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Arora is expected to visit the accident site on Thursday to assess the situation.

Central Railway officials clarified that there was no evidence of a fire or spark in the train that could have triggered the panic. “There was no fire or smoke in the coach, based on the information available,” said Dilip Kumar, Executive Director, Information and Publicity, Railway Board.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, addressing the situation from Davos, Switzerland, expressed his condolences and announced financial aid of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased. The Railway Ministry also declared an ex-gratia payment of Rs 1.5 lakh to the kin of the victims, Rs 50,000 for those with serious injuries, and Rs 5,000 for minor injuries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his sympathies, stating, “Anguished by the tragic accident on the railway tracks in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the injured.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also expressed grief over the incident, with Shah ensuring all necessary assistance for the injured and Vaishnaw directing officials to provide proper medical care.
